Petition to CNN leadership, including Jeff Zucker, Michael Bass, Katrina Cukaj, and Richard Davis:

Research has shown that CNN spent more time on fossil fuel advertising than they did reporting on climate change -- by 5-to-1. And this disparity in air time happened right after we found that 2015 was the hottest year on record!

This kind of Climate Silence is unacceptable. We call on you to reject ads from fossil fuel polluters like American Petroleum Institute and the Koch brothers, and start covering the climate crisis every day.

In the weeks following announcements that 2015 was the hottest year on record and that February 2016 was the hottest month on record, CNN aired FIVE TIMES more fossil fuel advertising than climate reporting. Specifically, CNN aired 23.5 minutes of American Petroleum Institute ads, compared to just five minutes of coverage about climate change or the temperature records. (1)

The American Petroleum Institute, a lobby group that has denied climate change, is getting more coverage than the news about humanity’s greatest challenge. And this study didn’t even include advertising from individual fossil fuel companies. CNN has refused advertising before for ads that could have harmful consequences -- perpetuating an addiction to fossil fuels in the face of devastating climate change could not be more harmful for our planet and must be rejected.

Only one of CNN’s three woefully inadequate reports about temperature records made any mention of “climate change” or “global warming” -- and none addressed carbon pollution from the fossil fuel industry or any of the other ways in which humans are causing global warming. (1)

During the same periods Media Matters studied, MSNBC aired far fewer oil industry ads and far more climate coverage, including a whole segment on "Hardball" that featured interviews with NASA scientists and other experts. (1)

As one of the largest news organizations on the planet and a leading network covering key issues like science, the presidential election and more, we need CNN to do better. We demand CNN #ReportOnClimate.
